"BOGENHARMONIE" FOOOTBRIDGE

The “Bogenharmonie” project is a new pedestrian and cycling bridge in the municipality of Köniz, designed to improve connectivity across the railway and highway corridors that divide the area of Niederwangen. Positioned near the Niederwangen train station and the upcoming Bern Police Center, the bridge forms a strategic link in a rapidly developing urban district expecting over 1,000 new housing units and several new facilities by 2028.

The project addresses the need to re-establish continuous pedestrian and cycling routes between the town center, surrounding residential areas, and the future Juch-Hallmatt neighborhood. The bridge design emphasizes functionality, accessibility, and minimal visual impact while integrating seamlessly into the urban and natural context.

Architecturally, the bridge features a gently curved structure with a clean and simple design that supports both aesthetic and structural efficiency. Its light, transparent steel form ensures safe crossings over the highway and railway with a clear span, integrating stair and elevator access points. The geometry of the deck has been optimized for user comfort and compliance with technical requirements, including a usable width of 3.5 meters and accessible slopes.

The bridge connects to landscaped paths and gathering spaces, enhancing public access and supporting social interaction. The planting concept promotes ecological continuity and biodiversity, particularly through integration with a local river restoration project and new green corridors.

From a construction standpoint, the bridge is built using high-quality, low-impact materials. Steel is sourced through low-emission processes, and a bio-based surface coating enhances durability and comfort. The structural system uses prefabricated elements and lightweight components to reduce environmental impact and simplify assembly.

Sustainability is central to the project. The design minimizes material use through intelligent geometry and integrates features to support long-term durability with minimal maintenance. The project aligns with national sustainability guidelines (SNBS) and prioritizes low-emission construction, including reusing soil from nearby developments to shape the access ramp.

Lighting is integrated into the handrails, ensuring user safety and energy efficiency without glare. All electrical components are protected and discreetly installed to maintain the bridge’s clean appearance.

With a design life of over 100 years, the Bogenharmonie bridge is both a critical piece of infrastructure and a meaningful urban connector—supporting mobility, environmental goals, and the transformation of Niederwangen into a cohesive and accessible community.
