For the urban garden festival Bilbao Jardín about 30 proposals for a temporary garden of 80m2 within the urban fabric of of Bilbao were chosen. The gardens were allocated a spot in the city after their selection by the organizing committee. This meant that the designers had no pre-knowledge about the exact context of their design.
In response to the fact that the garden had to be conceptualized without using a specific situation as a base, Cacticity challenges the idea of the garden by introducing it into the context of art. In this case, the garden is an autonomous object, open to interpretation with a provocative and contemplative power demanding an emotional response from the viewer.
More than 1000 cacti ranging in height from 10 centimetres to 1 metre compose an incongruous section of landscape in the square adjoining the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts. Not designed to be walked upon; the installation rather compels recognition as a tactile space to be explored visually.
