The 8,500-square-foot Oka-Hong Lab at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) includes research laboratory and offices for Professor of Biology and Chen Scholar Yuki Oka, Ph.D., and Betty Hong, Ph.D., Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, in Caltech’s Biology & Biological Engineering (BBE) Division. The lab investigates molecular and neural mechanisms and the roles they play in physiology, behavior, and disease.
The design-build project was created by MATT Construction and CO Architects on the first floor and basement of Caltech’s Beckman Behavioral Biology Laboratory Building, originally completed in 1974.
The program features a 5,900-square-foot main lab, 2,200 square feet of configuration space, and 2,500 square feet of shell space. The restroom and drinking fountain were modernized to ADA standards.
The Caltech Oka-Hong Lab project also entailed modernization of the dark room, creating a new CITNET room, and adding a new equipment room plus laboratory research rooms.
