Arrupe Campus

The Arrupe Campus, located in the heart of Madrid’s Chamartín District, adjacent to Plaza del Duque de Pastrana, is the result of an architecture competition that invited Spain’s most prestigious architectural firms, renowned for their distinguished trajectories. The project, promoted by the Society of Jesus with the Pontifical University of Comillas and the University of Deusto as collaborating partners, and Georgetown University as a strategic academic ally, represents a landmark in educational design.

Following the competition, the conceptualization phase involved a four-month collaborative workshop led by David Stephen, a renowned expert in educational architecture for schools and universities. This workshop brought together past and future students, faculty members, property representatives, architects, engineers, and sustainability consultants. The result is an academic program and spatial model that reflect the evolution of higher education methodologies, emphasizing flexible spaces, collaborative environments, and adaptive approaches to teaching, networking, and professional engagement.

Construction of the campus began shortly after this intensive design phase, and the facility has been operational since September. The headquarters is composed of a main core and an adjacent volume, showcasing balanced volumetric proportions and a design centered on functional adaptability. Its clean, geometric lines not only simplify execution and future maintenance but also enable the integration of industrialized solutions, such as serialized and prefabricated elements.

Spanning 8,455 square meters, the campus accommodates up to 1,000 students and introduces a groundbreaking spatial concept: four "learning neighborhoods." These zones integrate traditional classrooms with spaces for group collaboration, meetings, relaxation, and other uses, fostering the implementation of a progressive pedagogical model. The building also features an array of advanced facilities, including prototyping rooms, audiovisual media laboratories, a coworking area, a media lab, a finance laboratory, and a variety of technology-enhanced spaces tailored to innovative educational practices.

At its core lies a 335-square-meter assembly hall, embodying the project’s emphasis on flexibility and multifunctionality. This space serves as the heart of the building, adaptable to various uses such as an auditorium, conference room, dining area, or event venue. Its modular design ensures versatility in size, configuration, and functionality.

The architectural design extends its innovative approach to the exterior. The main entrance, located on Plaza del Duque de Pastrana, is marked by a striking steel canopy, while the upper perimeter terrace is encased in prominent concrete ribs. These materials—concrete, glass, and wood—are not only structural elements but also contribute to the aesthetic and tactile experience of the building.

Achieving LEED Gold Certification, the project exemplifies a commitment to sustainability through energy-efficient systems, high-quality materials, and thoughtful design. This certification underscores the alignment of the campus’s values with environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

The Arrupe Campus is more than a building; it is a hub for innovation, collaboration, and transformative education. Its design fosters an environment where students, faculty, and professionals can connect, learn, and grow. Rooted in the values of adaptability and sustainability, the campus stands as a testament to the future of educational spaces, blending visionary architecture with the evolving needs of society.

The building has just received an Honorable Mention, in the category of Light Façade, at the 2024 Veteco-Asefave Awards.
