The ANFFAS day centre in the town of Settimo San Pietro is a small, simple building. Our remit was to design a rehabilitation facility for persons with cognitive and communication disabilities. Therefore, we conceived it with users in mind, with fit-for purpose, comfortable, quality spaces.
A welcoming place offering a pleasant environment for a range of daytime activities – working, learning, playing, eating and engaging with others. Bright, colourful spaces, of great visual and spatial clarity, and with close links and communication between indoor and outdoor areas. A user-friendly architecture, safe but also free, where rational design and engineering guarantee energy efficiency and high performance standards, coupled with relatively low construction and running costs.
The centre is located within a development on the outskirts of the village. A classic low-density residential development, largely anonymous, consisting of small detached or terraced houses. Some lots have already been completed, others are still under construction, and some plots are still empty, giving a patchwork impression. A Babel of lost signs.
Light, however, has not been lost. It is the distinctive light of this territory: bright, Mediterranean, strong. We chose an inner courtyard plan, to the extent possible, because we felt that this layout was the best suited for the purposes of the building and to achieve integration with the surrounding urban context. An inward-looking architecture, working with light and enclosing the inner courtyard as an open space providing views and allowing interaction.
