Remote Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing Space

The Remote Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing Space in Thermi, Thessaloniki, was designed as a modern space for research, collaboration, and knowledge sharing for EKETA (National Center for Research and Technology Development
Research and Innovation). The architectural proposal seeks to translate the concepts of communication, flexibility, and innovation into an open and adaptable space, while maintaining a clean, recognizable morphological identity that characterizes all of EKETA’s new buildings.

The initial concept for the composition stems from the extension of the sides of a hexagonal shape and the creation of six main axes, which also serve as a symbolic reference to EKETA’s structure: the five represent the Center’s five Institutes, while the sixth constitutes the axis of outreach, signifying connection, communication, and the spread of knowledge to the broader public.

The building is primarily made of glass, allowing for constant visual communication between the interior and exterior. A second skin of vertical white louvers surrounds the shell, functioning as a light filter and, at the same time, as a key element of its architectural expression. The repetition of these slender vertical elements alters the perception of the building depending on the observer’s position and lighting conditions.

The building’s main function is organized on the ground floor according to the concept of a modern architectural pavilion: an open and flexible space where movement, viewing, and communication between the various functions remain continuous. Upon entering, visitors immediately grasp the overall layout and can either follow a circular path among the individual powerwalls or proceed directly to their destination.
Versatility is a key design parameter. The space can be configured as a showroom, a conference hall seating up to 130 people, or as an open exhibition space. The basement houses the necessary support and technical functions.

Ultimately, the project treats architecture not as a static shell, but as an infrastructure for collaboration and transformation. Geometry, transparency, light, and freedom of movement come together to create an environment that reflects the very nature of research and innovation: open, dynamic, and constantly evolving.
