The Children’s House Rankweil, designed by Christian Schmoelz Architekt as part of the educational network of the market town of Rankweil, Austria, accommodates 72 children within an integrated learning environment. Organised around a distinctive Y-shaped plan, the building combines indoor and outdoor learning spaces with an emphasis on environmental quality, healthy materials, and year-round access to nature.
Constructed primarily from timber and designed to meet high ecological building standards, the project demonstrates how early childhood facilities can support well-being through passive environmental strategies, durable construction, and close integration with the surrounding landscape.
A compact plan connected to nature
The building's Y-shaped configuration responds both to the constrained site and the educational programme by dividing the outdoor areas into distinct landscapes for different activities. These include an entrance courtyard, an outdoor dining garden, and a nature playground designed to encourage exploration, movement, and sensory learning.
Each of the three learning clusters is directly connected to outdoor spaces through loggias, terraces, or play areas, allowing children to move freely between indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year. This close relationship with nature supports experiential learning while reducing the distinction between the building and its landscape.
Timber construction and healthy interiors
The building combines a solid concrete circulation core with prefabricated timber structural elements, balancing durability with the environmental advantages of renewable materials. The central core also contributes to the building's environmental performance by acting as a thermal buffer and supporting passive cooling.
The façades are clad in regional spruce timber sourced from the Rankweil agricultural community, reducing transportation impacts while supporting local forestry. Internally, ash timber finishes and clay plaster walls create warm learning environments and contribute to healthy indoor air quality through the natural regulation of humidity.
Passive environmental performance
Environmental performance is integrated into the architectural design rather than added through complex technical systems. During summer, automatically controlled ventilation openings within the central circulation core promote natural air movement, allowing the building to cool passively and reducing reliance on mechanical ventilation.
Outdoor terraces on the upper levels are protected by motorised shade sails, enabling comfortable use during warmer months while limiting direct solar gain. Daylight throughout the building reduces dependence on artificial lighting and creates bright, visually comfortable learning spaces.
