Located in Lujiazui Financial & Trade Zone of Pudong District, China Merchants Bank Tower incorporates 80,000m2 of office space and banker’s club that occupy the split site in the banking district of Shanghai, along the Huang Pu River.
The 208-meter tall design was inspired by its location and the client’s history in shipping. While the form of the building exterior reflects a pair of curved sails, the interior footprint is based on figure eight, an auspicious number that enables two sites split by a public street to integrate seamlessly and intuitively.
The site is divided into north and south areas by the city axis connecting Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Huangpu River Landscaping Belt. The north and south towers are linked by a two-storey connecting bridge, with an open garden on the upper level, and an all-weather corridor on the lower level.
The design of the building incorporated an environmental strategy from its earliest stages and in 2014 the CMB Tower obtained the LEED certification gold accreditation.
