Cornelis is a new residential building for families in the city, designed by FARO and Van Bergen Architectura. The complex comprises 85 owner-occupied apartments in a range of sizes, each with a south-facing outdoor space. At ground level, a childcare centre, after-school care, hospitality and studios create a lively connection with the square and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Architecture for Nieuw-West
Building on the ideas of Cornelis van Eesteren and the urban planning principles of the Western Garden Cities, the building offers a contemporary interpretation of collective living and green space. The timber circulation route and seasonal stair garden act as social arteries where residents can meet and children can play, while green brick, natural stone and various types of timber create a strong sense of materiality, durability and architectural expression.

Healthy Urban Living
The design is shaped by light, air and space. Generous entrance halls, staircases, corridors, a communal living room and slides create a network of sightlines and places for interaction, culminating in the adventurous stair garden: a green space where play and social encounters become a natural part of everyday life. In this way, Cornelis connects with Amsterdam’s ‘Moving City’ vision, in which movement is an integral part of daily life.
