Our design approach
- Clients are well-traveled, aware, simple and close to nature.
- They wanted a simple yet elegant home, keeping their requirement and personality in view we tried interpreting that in the design.
- A major challenge for us was to satisfy the Vastu requirement and yet retain the function and privacy without having to compromise on design aesthetics
- We normally prefer a family room on the rear side of the home for want of privacy but here The living/family room had to be in the northeast quadrant ( Vastu requirement ) on a North facing plot, meaning you would end up seeing the family room from the entrance which is also on Northeast.
- On this squarish plot we came out with a simple building with a distinctive feature of a screened courtyard on the front ( North & East ) substituted for a traditional family backyard, This feature is a direct result of Vastu requirement.
- This partially covered courtyard functions as an extension of living and is, therefore where most gatherings take place. It's a grand generic space which allows flexible setting and acts as a threshold between home and nature.
- The operable screens create required privacy and also open up whenever required to get both spaces together creating one large green space. The screen is customized and is made of louvers in a combination of metal frame and wood
- This layout is open on three sides with a huge double-height in the center above the living area. Apart from the huge courtyard on the northeast, a small backyard beside kitchen/dining acts as an extension to the outdoor spaces with a specimen tree and outdoor dining/ small eating area. Another partially covered deck with a big opening on west allows very good views and ventilation. With three sides open this scheme is full of natural light and fresh air flowing across the home not needing much air-conditioning. The western opening is recessed deep to keep direct sunlight away only taking the reflected light off the floor which is very welcoming during summers avoiding the harsh direct sun.
- All south and western walls are insulated using the double-wall technique to keep the house from unwanted heat gain.
- The courtyard allows a lot of light in the morning casting some very interesting shadows throughout the day. The flooring of the courtyard is a combination of white marble, wood, and natural stone and pebbles.
- Interiors these days are trend-driven, with platforms like Pinterest, people are increasingly autonomous in sourcing ideas which are mostly forced, we wanted to maintain the spirit by working on proportions and scale. wanted the home to have a bigger role to play than just visually pleasing the visitor. We do not have a lot of decoration happening and prefer a simpler feel which was also a true reflection of our clients. There is a bigger side to designing spaces than just the decor, instead, we wanted to work on the quality of interior architecture, circulation spaces and especially air & light movement throughout the house.
