Edifício Jardim Curitiba marks Rodrigo Oliveira's first project executed in Curitiba, Brazil, born from a close reading of the city's climate, architecture and landscape.
In a capital known for its colder winters and a very particular urban atmosphere, the landscape design starts from the choice of temperate-climate species, uncommon in many projects carried out in São Paulo and other regions of the Southeast. This condition opened space for species closer to the Curitiba experience, able to follow the local climate, the seasons and the presence of greenery at different heights.
In dialogue with Arquea Arquitetos’s architecture design, the landscape project follows the building's seven floors and ground level through planters integrated into the façade. More than carrying greenery beyond ground level, this solution turns vegetation into part of how the building is read, occupying planes, heights and setbacks with a living presence that brings nature and architecture closer together.
The single-block layout also allowed the creation of a large garden, able to qualify the views and the experience of the apartments. Some of the units face the Oscar Niemeyer Museum; others face the new landscape created on the site itself. In this sense, open space gains the same importance as built space, becoming so central to the project that it lends the development its name.
On the ground floor, the garden in the front setback creates a more generous relationship with the city. Open to the street, it extends the presence of greenery along the path of passersby and helps place the building within a neighborhood in transformation, close to one of Curitiba's foremost cultural landmarks.
More than installing gardens, the project proposes a way for landscape to take part in the life of the building. In Curitiba, where climate, city and vegetation each move at their own pace, Edifício Jardim reveals a landscape design that grows from its place and contributes to a more sensitive, natural architecture, connected to its surroundings.
About Rodrigo Oliveira Paisagismo
Based in São Paulo, Rodrigo Oliveira Paisagismo is recognized as one of the country's most respected landscape design studios. At its helm is Rodrigo Oliveira, a landscape designer with more than 30 years of experience. An agronomist by training, educated at the Federal University of Viçosa, he also trained as an Arborist in Florida, in the United States, shaping a career defined by a close attention to landscape. His work draws on the richness of Brazilian forests to create tropical gardens, while incorporating a range of other references, from the asymmetry of Japanese gardens to classical Italian compositions.
