These proposals will reinvigorate a redundant 1930s cinema in Edinburgh, integrating the best features of the original building with bold contemporary interventions to create a unique new resource for the city's South Side.Significant portions of the building are retained and refurbished, including the original Art Deco facade and associated foyer spaces. The existing shell of the auditorium is also preserved, within which a new courtyard space will be created at the heart of the scheme.
The front of the former cinema will be restored to create a cafe, a restaurant and a multi-purpose space for community use which incorporates a film projection area and meeting rooms. To the rear of the site, infill development replaces an existing gap in the streetscape and brings new animation to the street.A hotel providing flexible accommodation is inserted within the retained brick shell of the auditorium and is to feature bespoke furniture and fittings designed in collaboration with Scottish artists.
The resulting uniquely creative interiors will be in keeping both with the arts-focused nature of the new development and also with the social, cultural and architectural significance of the former Edinburgh Odeon. The new public courtyard at the heart of the development also showcases work from a series of artists' studios arranged around the courtyard at ground level.
