Not Another Side Extension: A Unique Approach to Expanding a Home in Islington

Where full-width rear extensions have become the norm, forresterarchitects took a different approach with a recent project in Islington, North London. The result was so striking that a neighbour was inspired to commission their own unique extension, with one key distinction—there would be no conventional side extension. Instead, the focus was on preserving the distinctive character of the home while enhancing its connection to the surrounding garden and sky.

Rather than follow the trend of adding a large rear extension, the design sought to open up the home in a way that maximized the views of the garden without compromising the original architectural integrity. With long, elongated gardens and an expansive view of the sky, the project aimed to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Meticulous landscaping transformed the garden into a visually stunning space that feels like a natural extension of the kitchen, thanks to carefully framed views that bring the outdoors in.

One of the standout features is a newly configured bay window, designed as a stylish focal point that frames the garden and surrounding landscape. This window serves as both a viewing platform and a design statement, enhancing the connection between the home’s interior and exterior. The balance between openness and privacy was key to the design, ensuring that while the spaces feel airy and integrated with nature, there remains a sense of seclusion and comfort for the occupants.
