A few cracks, a mossed wall, a broken windowpane, sagging doors, the eroded landscape, a small plant which has struggled through the brickwork. These are the subtle details of a mighty bastion which has witnessed and endured many events throughout its long history. Characteristics of a fortress which is rich in the experiences and stories of the people who have built here, slept in damp rooms, spent years being fort watchmen or more recently, attended a play or celebrated midsummer night.

A new function for the fort has been researched in a study carried out by OIII whereby the qualities of the fort which have ‘grown over time’ will form the starting point. The stern facades of the fortress buildings cut through the eroded landscape. The new construction continues the line and the rhythm of the barracks as though the engineer of the fort, back in 1876, had anticipated a future expansion. An extension of the shape of the barracks in the landscape enlarges the terreplein which is surrounded by the geo hall, halls, a restaurant, warehouses and expo in the barracks. The terreplein, once the base for the soldiers of the fort, will now become a lively meeting place forming the heart from the which the discovery of the fort can unfold.
