When it comes to making effective offices, size doesn’t matter. This 1,110-square-feet workspace belonging to a construction office is painted a sunshine yellow and designed like an art gallery. Conceptualised by Arun Shekar and Mohammed Afnan of Humming Tree and situated in Calicut, Kerala this office is light and airy, with clean lines and colourful details, making it a great place to work at. “The brief was to create a dynamic space with heaps of daylight. The look had to be minimal but outlandish. Definitely not like a typical ‘builder’s office’ with exposed materials,” says Shekar. So the team ignored the typical office rule book and looked at commercial art galleries for inspiration.
The Reception
The sun-kissed reception area facing west immediately catches attention. One might think that too much colour in an office might be distracting, but the deep yellow is actually inspiring and motivating. The reception is accentuated by a sleek black capsule desk. Jeff Koon’s playful balloon dog sits proudly on the reception table. “The idea was to keep it as clutter-free and open as possible within the limited space. So we avoided the use of unnecessary signages barring a strip of the company name running on the rear wall of the reception creating a sleek and elegant backdrop,” explains Afnan. Two statement rod lights dropping from the ceiling jazz things up. Right next to the reception is the edgy waiting lounge furnished with prussian blue couches and back vinyl flooring. The marble wall hangings on white walls add a touch of sophistication to the room.
