Make were commissioned to devise a sustainable masterplan concept for a plot within a wider regeneration area located next to Shanghai’s Hongqiao airport, which will become a major creative industries hub. The development offers a diverse range of building types and sizes – including offices, serviced apartments, hotels, retail, leisure facilities and exhibition centres – which will maximise the site’s market potential and create a rich and varied community.
This multi-functional destination is well connected, with links directly to the city and the surrounding neighbourhoods. The shape of the development has been inspired by the undulating forms of a rice valley; high edges face busy outer roads, while the middle of the site is a calm, green area protected from the intrusions of traffic and noise.
A network of public gardens and landscaped open spaces create pedestrian and cycle-friendly spaces and legible routes.Three key buildings – an NBC stadium, an exhibition centre and a gateway building – help to define these spaces, supported by new routes and street types with different characters, designed to suit a variety of uses and transport modes. The new streets are aligned with those around the edges, allowing for seamless connections between the site and any potential future development.
