Hotel Orly

The Location

The new hotel and conference centre is situated opposite Amsterdam Sloterdijk station. This location is characterised by a significant difference in level (approximately 5.5 metres) between Radarweg and Barajesweg and the "Hemboog", a curving railway viaduct and elevated station. Both of these characteristics of the site have lent extra quality to the design of the hotel/conference centre. The curved railway viaduct creates a large, covered entrance square on two levels. This square, with its striking coloured paving, steps and benches, provides a spacious setting all around the complex. On the South side, alongside the entrance and parallel to the cycle path, a pavement café is planned for the bar and coffee corner.

The architecture

The approx. 100-metre tall hotel towers act as a "landmark" for the broad surrounding area and will guarantee the visibility of the complex from a great distance. This will be reinforced by the facades, which are opened up in a expressive free shape at the highest point on the towers. In the evenings, the light emanating from the building will make the top of the complex even more visible. The facades above the entrance on Radarweg will be opened up in the same free expressive shape, thereby reinforcing the visibility of the entrance. This also allows the design to correspond to the large urban ambitions of the urban development plan for Sloterdijk. The facades of the entire complex will be made from smooth and bright prefab concrete, whereby on the hotel fl oors, the glazed areas will be fl ush with the concrete surface of the facades. Along with the whiteness of the concrete, this will give the complex an extra splendour and prestige.
