The site is located inKadogawa-cho, Miyazaki Prefecture, a great environment surrounded by rural and mountainous landscapes with existing houses and relatively open.
The owner, a family of four, invitesmany friends on weekends. In response to their habit of gathering, we decided to create a large hall at the center of the house and scatter various places to staywithin the house.
The building is a volume with a simple square of 8m x 8m in plan. Placed at the center of it is a large double-height hall running on the north-south axis with a width of 2.7m and a depth of 8m,where a large number of people can gather.
This central hall is flanked by the east and the west wingswhere each room is located.
By connecting the central hall and each roomthrough openings on the walls and the ceilings, the boundaries between the roomsare obscured and openness is maximized within the limited volume.
A large wooden sliding door with a width of 2.7m is installed at the boundary between the inside and the outside. Connecting the garden on the south sidewith the rural landscapeon the north side, it welcomes daylight, ventilation and rich scenery to the interior.
By creating a large double-height hall in the center of this small house, a large number of people gather to find a distance they feel at ease withand a place they belong to. The houseis intended to incorporate into its interior a park-like field and playground equipment-like spots, where the family of new generation connects with each other and activates their communication.
