Hutch is a collective of passionate designers, engineers, and artists hell-bent on making action-packed and visually stunning games. When they acquired new space in London’s tech hub of Shoreditch they wanted to create a bespoke and fun workplace that would help them attract the most in-demand tech talent London has to offer.
we spent time with the Hutch project team to develop their project brief and discovered, in such a highly competitive market, innovation was at the very core of their business and they wanted this translated into their new workplace.
Our approach to design was to create a confident and quirky workplace, that accentuated the existing character of the building and portrayed an image of innovation. Key to the design brief was to create a lasting first impression for visitors that was creative and conveyed the business as honest and down to earth. It was essential that the workspace provided plenty of flexible working areas in order to cater for the teams working needs and to support spontaneous collaboration.
Guests are welcomed into a comfortable and quirky front of house area where bold custom wall graphics mix with a palette of exposed brick and worn tan leather to create a relaxed vibe where guests and staff are invited to chill out. This space merges into the staff breakout area and open plan kitchen, further enhancing a transparent company culture. These adjacent spaces can open up into a town hall space that accommodates up to 60 people and allows the Hutch team to hold seminars and events. Custom designed wall joinery houses additional casual seating so that when it’s time for a meeting employees can pull a stool out and take a seat then when they’re done, slotted back into the wall for tidy storage.
A sliding folding wall connects the front of house space to the main work area, where scattered amongst open plan desking, a variety of informal work areas, including high bench tables with stool seating and casual armchairs allow staff to hold impromptu meetings and quickly collaborate over concepts. The fun and industrial look and feel weaved throughout the entirety of the office compliments the Hutch brand personality and supports the energetic and fast-paced nature of the business, allowing them to remain at the forefront of their industry and portrays their business as ready to take on the next generation of gaming creatives!
