As this is a maintenance facility, the challenge became one of creating an envelope that was affordable and aesthetically pleasing. This was accomplished directly by the use of clay brick as the primary skin of the building. Because of the modular aspects of clay bricks, we were able to use the same amount of material without solely relying on running bond coursing in the design. When one has a skilled mason, the design manifests as a complete composition. Brick accents in this design were used to achieve aesthetic goals by the implementation of alternating types of brick courses rather than use of all running bond courses or alternating colors of brick. The architectural base of the Operations Center West is established by using the larger modules of ground faced and CMU courses, however, the true pallet of the composition remains clay brick in its varied and stylized ornamentations.
