A simple and sober building like a Jewish burial ceremony. Starting from a 10x10x5 m parallelepiped, the oratory takes shape through the reflection of two natural elements: water and light.
Water, strong in symbolism, is present in the purification ritual when leaving the cemetery. Thus, the roof of the oratory deforms in order to collect rainwater in a small fountain at the entrance; where the faithful can wash their hands with a basin before leaving the cemetery.
The new building widens and accompanies, by the articulation of its covered courtyard, the entry on the site, by linking between them places and playground of characters and different qualities.
Two different quality light sources illuminate the oratory. The first is an overhead opening bringing a diffuse light from the north to the speaker. The second illuminates the assembly through a wood filter on the south facade. Marking the entrance, the filter draws a subtle pattern of stars of David; unique Jewish symbol of the oratory and legible only inside the cemetery. Visitors can see the interior of the building; while any view from the road is obstructed.
The oratory revisits the materiality of the temple of Solomon. Thus, the outer shell is mineral, while the interior is clad in wood.
