Designed by Özer\Ürger Architecture, the Kocaeli Social Life Center aims to create a multifunctional public space with a strong ecological focus that redefines the relationship between the city and nature.
Led by architects Ahmet Mucip Ürger and Ali Özer, Özer\Ürger Architecture is known for its award-winning architectural and public space projects, which seek to integrate individuals into urban life by designing the relationship between the built environment and people. With the Kocaeli Social Life Center, the practice reconsiders the disconnection between the city, nature, the waterfront, and public life. Developed by Özer\Ürger Architecture, the project positions architecture not merely as the production of buildings, but as an ecological and social interface, placing the wetlands around the Gulf of İzmit at the center of its approach.
Bearing the signature of Özer\Ürger Architecture, the Kocaeli Social Life Center was conceived with the aim of protecting and strengthening the wetland ecosystem located along one of the world’s most important bird migration routes. The strategies developed with consideration for the area’s water balance, vegetation, and wildlife prioritize ecological continuity while integrating this unique landscape, which is under urbanization pressure, with public uses in line with Özer\Ürger Architecture’s approach to urban design. Through birdwatching areas, nature-based walking routes, and open-space arrangements, Özer\Ürger Architecture aims to create new experiential spaces where urban residents can engage directly with nature.
Bringing together research, education, culture, and social life programs, the project was designed by Özer\Ürger Architecture as a multifunctional public center in which indoor and outdoor spaces are conceived as an integrated whole. The building and open-space system, developed in phases, reflects Özer\Ürger Architecture’s sustainability- and flexibility-oriented approach, while proposing a controlled transformation, both spatially and ecologically, throughout the implementation process.
In Özer\Ürger Architecture’s approach, a building is not treated as an object that draws sharp boundaries between the city and nature, but as a threshold that establishes a relationship between the two. Developed in line with this approach, the Kocaeli Social Life Center presents a holistic model of public space that brings nature into the city, strengthens public life, and serves as a reference for a sustainable urban future.
