Kodiak Community Swimming Pool

Kodiak Community Swimming Pool

Working closely with the Kodiak Island Borough, we designed an important public building and resource for the community. Departing from the typical institutional swimming pool, we wanted to create a design which was warm, clean, acoustically attenuated, and addressed local climatic conditions.

The most inventive part of the project is the mechanical heating and ventilation system. Through a series of perimeter ducts under the pool decking, the air and hear is distributed up the walls where it's dispersed though perforations within the interior cladding.

The perforations also acoustically attenuate the space to improve people's sensory experience. Windows at the exterior are 'doubled', meaning that in addition to the typical insulated curtainwall, there are additional glass panels which maintain the continuity of the air flow within the walls, which also helps to reduce the frost and fog on glass that typically plague pools in northern climates.
