This used to be a house of no architectural interest which was built in the early 70s.
Its structure was very common in Northern Italy at that time: the ground floor was used for service space and a poorly lighted basement, a sort of second-class living room.
The design idea is to link the house with the garden that is now hosting beautiful plants of remarkable dimension, moving the space of the living area towards the external spaces.
The idea was to look for a greater connection among the family members, a stronger connection among the spaces, granting autonomous areas that can be personal but still remain strongly connected.
Another aim was to place the big amount of books that the family owns and to reach them easily.
A fluid space was organized, both in plan and in section, trying to have transparencies and connections, but also private acoustically isolated areas.
In the renovated part of the old house the space distribution remains basically unchanged by rationalizing the spaces with few acts.
From the beginning, the only thing we knew was that it should be a red house, “we love the Cantoniera houses”, our client said the first time we met.
