The Lassus Campus offers a home to Capellen Scholengemeenschap plus educational routes 10-14, Mens& and &Jij. In the new building, the various educational concepts have their own recognisable domain with varied teaching and working spaces that match the identity of the education in question. For example, for the teenage college 10-14 and the free secondary school Mens&, these are smaller instruction rooms and larger, organically shaped learning squares. The floor plans of Capellen Scholengemeenschap are based on a more classroom-like layout.

smart construction ensures column-free auditorium
The multifunctional auditorium connects the four educational domains. The playful grandstand with terraces and stairs is oriented towards the stage like an amphitheatre. This is located directly behind the transparent facade on the square so that the Campus can optimally present itself to its surroundings. In the old accommodation, the view of the stage was obstructed by columns in the auditorium. In the new building, we as a design team have solved this integrally with an ‘inverted construction’ in which the floor slabs above the school centre are suspended from the roof construction. The open auditorium makes the structural, wooden core visible over three floors.

connecting campus siteThe nature-inclusive campus site also functions as a connecting element. In order to optimally use the narrow plot for the total program and to retain as much outdoor space as possible, we have incorporated the sports facility into the building. On the first floor, so that all schools (also) have their own place on the ground floor. This compact three-layer design is also beneficial for mutual relationships.

maximum usability and future value
?The new construction is sustainable and future-proof. The campus is both self-sufficient and technically prepared for connection to a future central heating network in the district. The support system on a regular grid makes the internal layout very flexible. Future adjustments and expansion are also relatively simple, which maximally benefits the usability. The remountable facade with integrated nesting boxes is sustainably constructed from, among other things, click-brick and biocomposite in natural colors. Kinks in the facade give individuality to the various educational routes in the building and make the whole look friendly and less large. The energy-supplying canopy above the large roof terrace at the head of the building gives the campus a ‘face’ towards the entrance to the Holtenbroek district.

building for the neighborhood 
A smart zoning of the design means that various components, such as the auditorium with stage and kitchen facilities and the sports facilities, can be used and rented separately from the school. In this way, the neighbourhood can also make full use of the Campus. Because the educational facility also explicitly wants to be of added value to the district.
