In the vibrant city of Kolkata, Leafline unfolds as a 3,000 sq ft workspace envisioned by architect Pooja Bihani, founder of Spaces and Design. Designed for a medical device company, the office extends beyond the idea of a conventional workplace to become an environment that reflects the essence of life itself. The central inspiration comes from the leaf, a symbol of growth, nourishment and vitality. Just as a leafline sustains a tree by transporting essential nutrients, the design concept mirrors the role of the client’s medical devices in supporting and sustaining life. This connection between nature and purpose forms the core narrative of the project.

Bihani’s intent was to craft a workspace that reflects the life-giving impact of the client’s work while also prioritising the comfort and well-being of those who occupy the space. The leaf becomes a recurring motif across the interiors, influencing spatial planning, material choices, lighting and colour. Soft shades of green, natural textures and gentle illumination create a calm and restorative environment that encourages both concentration and creativity.

The design also responds thoughtfully to the constraints of the existing building, which originally featured low ceilings and limited daylight. Strategic interventions were introduced to visually expand the space. Ceilings were reconfigured to improve continuity, while smaller windows were framed with marble side panels to enhance the perception of depth and openness. The layout itself draws inspiration from the veins of a leaf, with circulation paths branching across the office to symbolise interconnectedness and collaboration.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a reception area where subtle leaf patterns are embedded within the wall textures, setting the tone for the narrative that unfolds throughout the workspace. The double-height foyer features a sculptural staircase composed of metal and stone, accented with delicate olive-green details. As one moves upward, the open-plan office reveals more expressive interpretations of the motif through partition screens, ceramics and custom shelving developed by Keph Design.

Lighting plays a significant role in reinforcing the design language. Custom fixtures in varying tones of green, some etched with vein-like patterns, introduce warmth while maintaining thematic coherence. Suspended meeting rooms along the landing feature dual-toned tables and tailored lighting elements that subtly echo the ideas of renewal and vitality. The spatial layout balances openness with privacy. One side accommodates executive offices and collaborative zones designed to encourage interaction, while the other houses directors’ cabins and focused workspaces. Breakout areas softened with indoor plants and organic forms provide relaxed pockets for informal conversations and reflection.

Material choices further strengthen the connection to nature. Wood, stone and glass lend a tactile and organic quality to the interiors, while green textiles complement a base palette of beige and milky white finishes. This restrained backdrop allows the vibrant greens to stand out, achieving a harmonious balance between elegance and calm. From leaf-patterned partitions to softly textured furnishings, each element contributes to a design language rooted in growth, care and vitality.

Ultimately, the workspace reflects Pooja Bihani’s concept-driven approach, where design meaningfully informs every spatial gesture and material selection.
