Located in Aarhus' thriving Godsbanen creative district, this new office and retail structure stands as a dynamic addition to the city's evolving urban fabric. The six-storey building integrates 11,000 m2 of office space above a ground-floor concept store and a multi-level car park with 350 parking spaces, establishing a robust, multifunctional structure that supports both business operations and urban life. The design emphasises openness and accessibility, as demonstrated by the building’s five facades, which are configured to be approachable from every angle.
Urban integration
The structure is set within the visionary urban development plan for Aarhus K, which aims to create a district that skillfully balances commercial, educational, and residential uses. Its specific placement alongside the new Aarhus School of Architecture and the Institut for (X) underscores its role in fostering collaboration and entrepreneurship.
The roof, envisioned as the “fifth facade,” has been activated for diverse uses, including urban farming, sports, and exhibitions, transforming an otherwise unused area into a new hub of public activity. The project carefully respects the cultural and historical significance of the Godsbanen area.
Materials and environmental performance
Key systems integrated into the design include advanced insulation techniques and systems to optimise indoor air quality, creating a healthier workspace. Efforts were made during construction to reduce waste and prioritise recycling significantly. The material strategy focused on selecting low-carbon materials to minimise the environmental footprint. Many of these materials were specifically chosen for future reuse or recycling, thereby extending the building’s lifecycle beyond its initial use. All materials met global standards for reduced toxicity. Materials with a long lifespan were also selected to minimise maintenance costs and reduce environmental strain over time. The project also utilised local contractors and fair labour practices.
Lidl's headquarters has been awarded the DGNB Platinum certification. The project also achieved the DGNB Diamond certification, a distinction reserved for projects that demonstrate architectural excellence alongside high standards for environmental and social performance.
The project delivers a high-density commercial program while establishing a new model for public engagement through its accessible roof and ground-level presence. The outcome is a key architectural development that aligns with the future ambitions of the Aarhus K district, prioritising durable design and functional flexibility.
