A large-scale urban renewal project is underway in the Reimerswaalbuurt in Osdorp, a neighborhood situated on the periphery of Amsterdam.
The ambitious plan was made under the supervision of the Architecten Cie. Nine building complexes featuring broad streets and auto-free squares are to be built. .
Mecanoo designed the first of these complexes which includes a school, sports hall, pre-school playrooms, a children’s day care center, a community center, 51 apartments and 21 single family homes. The neighbourhood will be enhanced with high quality social housing situated within a network of pleasant and safe streets, squares and green public space for enjoyment and socialising.
The fruitful result of the cooperation among the developer, Ymere, the school board, Makkink & Bey design studio and artist Elspeth Pikaar is a richly detailed social housing and multifunctional education complex. Mecanoo’s design example will further set the stage for the following residential complexes.
