Building on its proximity to three distinctive ecosystems of ocean, mountains, and desert, its commitment to leading-edge genomics research, and an emphasis on experiential learning, Occidental College embraces an interdisciplinary approach to environmental science. The Anderson Center for Environmental Sciences provides enhanced teaching, research, and exhibition space for Occidental’s biology department and meets growing program needs through both functional and formative improvements.
CO Architects staged a multi-phased renovation and addition to the Moore Lab and Biosciences Building, which houses the school’s biology, marine biology, and ornithology departments and provides new lab spaces that include an avian DNA lab for ancient specimen analysis, technology-enabled classrooms, research space, and offices. The incorporation of diving facilities enhances the college’s participation in the Southern California Marine Institute Alliance. The Moore Lab Building was renamed the Anderson Center for Environmental Sciences upon completion. At its heart is the Moore Collection, the world’s largest assemblage of Mexican birds.
