Healthcare has spent decades perfecting efficiency. The next frontier lies elsewhere—in designing for reassurance and emotional ease. It is this ambition that defines Oval, a fertility clinic in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills, where Phylosophy Design Studio dissolves the familiar language of clinical interiors into something more humane.
For patron Veena Reddy of GVK Reddy Ventures, the directive was precise in its ambitions: create a fertility clinic that comforted before it treated. Premium, certainly. Luxurious, yes. But above all, deeply soothing—a sanctuary for couples navigating one of life's most intimate and uncertain journeys. "The first question wasn't how the clinic should look," recalls Vasundhara Sampath, who crafted the clinic’s interior landscape. "It was how people should feel the moment they walked in. The answer was always calm."
The architectural shell was already in place. Designed by architect Sushil Wadhwa, the 12,000-square-foot space dedicated a third of its footprint to core clinical functions. Vasundhara's intervention unfolded across the remaining 8,000 square feet—the lounges, corridors, recovery rooms and waiting spaces where patients pause, breathe and gather themselves. If medicine occupied one half of the clinic, empathy found its expression in the other.
Emerald green, drawn from the brand's identity, appears sparingly throughout, punctuating an otherwise restrained palette of warm beiges and natural textures. It greets visitors at the entrance door, returns at the fluted marble reception desk, and quietly accompanies them through spaces designed to steady rather than stimulate. Beyond reception, the waiting lounge is anchored by the ‘Tree of Life’: a bespoke fibre mural by Hoozinc Studio, that depicts a woman as a tree with a child nestled at its roots. Neither literal nor overly symbolic, it offers a gentle meditation on nurture and new beginnings—qualities that inevitably colour the journeys unfolding within these walls.
Vasundhara recalls, “We kept asking ourselves whether a particular material, colour or artwork could make someone's journey feel just a little lighter." This sensibility governs the design language as it flows through the pharmacy, nurse stations, and corridors—unified by detailed wall panelling, cornices, ribbed door facades, and carefully calibrated details that allow the experience to remain reassuringly uninterrupted.
The lexicon extends seamlessly into seven patient lounges, each named after a flower rather than a number. Curved beading details soften architectural edges, while wood-finish flooring, bespoke artworks and warm lighting dissolve the visual vocabulary of conventional medical environments. Three consulting rooms continue the same material palette, balancing clinical functionality with residential comfort, while recovery rooms prioritise privacy through blackout curtains, plush finishes and carefully diffused illumination. The nursing station and CEO room carry green marble tops, while cherry-picked foliage speckle the milieu with unexpected generosity.
At the culmination of a corridor sits a small mandir, where a delicate nail-and-thread artwork of Baby Ganesha by artist Chetan Jain marks a space for reflection and hope. Recovery suites echo the same sensibility through ambient lighting, blackout curtains, upholstered furnishings and personalised artwork, creating spaces that feel restorative long after medical intervention has concluded.
For Vasundhara, the project's greatest success extends beyond finishes or detailing. “The most rewarding feedback came from patients who said they forgot they were inside a clinic,” she shares. “That emotional response reaffirmed everything we hoped design could achieve.”
Oval reminds us that healthcare design need not choose between precision and compassion. Here, thoughtful planning, haptics and meaningful artistry converge to create a state-of-the-art medical environment where healing begins with the reassuring experience of feeling genuinely cared for.
