PHILANTROPUS – a contemporary ode to the Amsterdam School
In the heart of Amsterdam-West, BALK Architects has transformed a former bicycle storage facility into a modern and multifunctional commercial office building. PHILANTROPUS is tucked away in a courtyard behind the existing buildings, but now opens up to the street and the city thanks to the addition of a new entrance building.

The design is a contemporary interpretation of the Amsterdam School, an architectural style characteristic of the neighborhood. Every brick has been carefully designed and applied, both in the entrance building and the main structure. The new canopy naturally invites visitors to enter.

Inside, two large skylights provide abundant daylight, with the refined detailing of the façade subtly continuing into the interior. The original concrete structure has been preserved and, with its robust character, forms a powerful part of the renewed whole.

PHILANTROPUS demonstrates how an existing structure can, through careful intervention, be transformed into a sustainable and timeless building.
