Housed in a former mechanic's garage, Pirate Life’s Melbourne brand home reflects the creative vision of its founders. Light boxes, recurring mural motifs, and ale-coloured welder’s curtains reference both the site's automotive history and Pirate Life’s foundations in old school hospitality and contemporary street culture.
 
The adaptive reuse of the former industrial building required a skilful balance of responding to present-day regulatory frameworks, multi-national stakeholder requirements, and post-pandemic budgetary constraints. The resulting space leverages much of its original character, harking back to the brand’s roots in the early industrial landscape of Port Adelaide, but within a Melbourne context.
 
Strategic augmentations to the existing facade reintroduce access to natural light and restore the connection to the public interface. A large olive tree and smaller planters made from repurposed stock troughs soften the post-industrial character of the interior. The existing mechanic’s pit forms the footprint for a new dining area suspended above it, layering present and former uses to reinforce history as a continuum.
 
South Australian and Victorian artisans were engaged to help root the beer hall in both local heritage and the creative landscape of Port Melbourne. Raw fittings and self-finishing materials extend the hardwearing urban palette throughout the ground floor, intentionally integrating with the public realm.
