Reis NUNES HOUSE - a refuge in the mountain

This house is marked by a very steep land and little walls made of local stones which supports the plot, as it´s so frequent in Madeira’s landscaping. This is the way to organise the space and to conquer the land, before starting any agricultural activitie.

Our proposal is a little shelter (66 square metres) consisting of a social division with a kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom. But the aim was for the construction to be as indiscernible as possible, like if it was part of the already existing mountain.

The formal solution is apointed by the carachteristics of this place, based on the existing stone walls and the small fishing village from where the house emerges, levitating over a chaotic network of illegal homes.

from the exterior, the house looks part of the mountain on which it rests, but inside, the house is oriented to the sea view, making very clear the intention to control that we want to see, and the integration of an object that melts perfectly with the mountain.
