The primary objective of the design was to retain the heritage values of the Mosman Conservation Area through restoration of the original Federation property fronting Military Road whilst enhancing the capacity and lifestyle of the residence. The visibility of the new development at the rear of the property is diminished by it’s aspect and adjacent developments to the north and south. The finishes on the new facades are neutral in character and do not impact the original building or the Conservation area. The composition of the elevations respond to the existing proportions and configuration of original window openings. The height of the development was restricted to the original ridge line negating any impact on the Military Road streetscape whilst the form and bulk of the extension is obscured by the original side walls and tiled roof with gables facing north and south. The separation of old and new is expressed by a 700mm wide x 300mm deep slot to the full height of the north and south facades complimenting the overall integrity of the original structure.
