A New York City couple bought a small flag-lot high on a hill surrounded by forest in the Hudson Valley. They asked us to look at the site and design a house to accommodate their young family for weekends, holidays, and its eventual use as a family compound. During the course of the project, the owners acquired adjacent properties, expanding the site to 30 acres.
We brought to the team a landscape architect who immediately said “take out those trees! They have plenty! There is a big view of the Catskills from here!”
The owner agreed.
KPa+d designed an 8,000 sf house that tucks itself into the hillside and takes advantage of tremendous views toward the west, while defining a variety of adjacent outdoor rooms. The home provides places to gather, to be alone, to experience intimacy with the woods and enjoy the grandeur of the mountains in the distance from both indoors and out.
