Riihi expo pavilion

Riihi expo pavilion

'Riihi' is a design proposal for the Finnish expo pavilion in Shanghai world expo 2010.

Riihi is the name for a Finnish hay-drying barn. The pavilion design has gotten its inspiration from the modular system of these simple barns: the exhibition spaces are organized in flexible wooden modules around a shallow inner lake.

The combination of water, wood and natural light form the concept of Riihi. The two-layered wooden facades bring indirect, glowing light to the exhibition spaces. The exhibition begins on the third floor, and the guests are led through the open exhibition levels descending gradually back to the lake. The whole pavilion is designed into a 6x6-meter modular system. The structure is completely out of wood and easily permits reuse of the building materials after the expo.
