The office building HORTUS is part of the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area – Main Campus and was opened in June 2025. Commissioned for planning application, design, and construction management, the design on the 2nd floor was executed differently than usual—not according to the individual wishes of specific tenants, but as a universally usable office space. The result is a well-thought-out mix of open-space areas and enclosed offices that, on the one hand, promote communication and interaction and, on the other hand, offer sufficient retreat options for focused work and meetings. A centrally located tea kitchen, accessible from all sides, complements the concept and is rounded off by the shared infrastructure on the ground floor, which includes rentable meeting rooms, a fitness area, and a restaurant.
Designed by our colleagues at Herzog & de Meuron, the office ensemble sets new standards in sustainability. Renewable and recyclable materials were consistently used, with the goal of achieving energy positivity 30 years after construction. The entire energy expended in the building's construction is intended to be fully amortized by that time—a milestone in sustainable building.
