S[]L[] H[]use – a checkered privacy envelope for a three-generation intermediate terrace house

S[]L[] H[]use (Solo House) is the first among this row of terrace houses to be newly constructed to its maximum permissible envelope. Protrusions and recesses address privacy, ventilation, shading, and reduction of facade-staining from rain. Thereafter they become a rhythmic composition of form.

Backed by towering condominium blocks behind, this intermediate terrace dwelling faces an enclave of landed houses at the front.

The front façade references the predominant building material of the neighbourhood by the selective use of bricks, while the rear façade retains an unadorned character. The checkered elevations alternatingly shield the three-generation family within, and reveal pockets of nature into the dwelling.

The attic floor is anticipated to be an important space for this three-generation family, and especially for the kids as a sheltered play area. Against the backdrop of tall condominium blocks, this uppermost floor's design therefore optimizes framed views to the sky and surroundings while being shielded for privacy, not unlike a 'secret garden'.
