Ruyterkade 128 on the waterfront in Amsterdam is an industrial structure with few standout features. View it as a house, however, and it takes on a whole new character.

This fresh perspective inspired MüllerVanTol in transforming the building into Spring House, a cross between a private club and a multi-tenant workspace. With a footprint measuring 16 by 24 metres, the former factory and distillery now contains a 1,450-m2 workplace, lab and platform for small, innovative companies. They form a community of members attracted to a venue that promotes sharing ideas in shared spaces.

MüllerVanTol remodelled the floors to create a family of rooms that lend the complex a domestic feel. Just as a good house is made up of different spaces for different activities, Spring House consists of larger and smaller spaces that allow occupants to find the right setting for every occasion and type of work — large/small, open/closed, short/long, individual/group, public/private. In that way, occupants can make the interior their own though a process of appropriation.

On the ground floor is the kitchen, in the form of a Restaurant Choux. A generous stairs rises to the open-plan living room on the first floor. Above that are studio and atelier floors, and at the top is a new roof structure in the attic.

The striking red façade? Neighbouring buildings have architecturally distinctive fronts, but Spring House needed an injection of colour to make it stand out on the street.

Spring House is a new members club at the IJ waterfront in Amsterdam. The club consists of several multifunctional work settings and spaces, each with a distinctive interior. We are also the home of restaurant Choux, offering delicious food and drinks.

Spring House is located on the De Ruyterkade 128 at walking distance from the historic city centre and Amsterdam Central Station. Originally a tin can factory dating back to 1911, it was purchased by Bols genever in 1941 and transformed into a liquor distillery. Interior design studio Müller Van Tol and architect Duzan Doepel have restored the building to its former glory, yet updated it for all current and future needs.

LIBRARY Situated at the waterside on the first floor, the Library (33m2) can seat 10 people and can be closed off to provide a comfortable, private environment. It houses a collection of books that can be used to inspire.

WAR ROOM The War Room (33.5 m2), located at the train side of the first floor, provides space for 14 people. Separated by glass walls and containing one large table, this room lends itself perfectly for meetings.

ATELIER Offering a great view on the IJ, this spacious room (190 m2) at the third floor can seat up to 100 people. Containing flexible interior and facilities such as screen and projector, the space is suitable for many purposes - from brainstorms to readings to drinks or dinners.

ATTIC Looking out over both the train- and waterside, the fourth floor Attic (60.5 m2) is a bright space with a beautiful view and access to both terraces. A space well suited for workshops, brainstorms or private group dinners.

NURSERY The third floor Nursery (46 m2) can seat 16 people, looks out over the railway and offers access to the terrace. It is separated by glass walls, making it a perfect setting for meetings and brainstorm sessions.

FISHBOWL This small (15 m2) but bright and comfortable room has a great view on the IJ river. It is located on the third floor and offers seats for six people. The space is perfect for smaller meetings and can be provided with facilities such as flipovers.

WATER SUITE Located at the fourth floor with a view of the IJ and sliding doors to the balcony, this room (45 m2) seats six people, suitable for small get-togethers.

THE NEIGHBOURS This spacious room is located at the ground floor and has a private entrance. With its industrial look and feel this space can be used for different events and gatherings.
