Taizhou Wanglinyang Island is located in the rapidly developing city of Taizhou in the Jiangsu province of eastern China. The future waterfront development was inspired by the Song dynasty painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival. The design references traditional Chinese architectural settings and proportions to establish a strong relationship with the natural environment.
The buildings are clustered to create bridges elevated two meters above the river, simultaneously providing access to both sides of the waterway and creating a continuous retail pathway. The scheme comprises retail zones, a social hub, and a cultural park, and enables the future development of public spaces merged with landscape. It also proposes commercial landmarks with cultural significance, while emphasising contemporary lifestyles. The scheme highlights the growing importance of public space in China.
