Tashas Cafe

tashas Al Bateen is a boutique style cafe located in the heart of the affluent suburb of Al Bateen in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It is an elegant bohemian inspired escape alongside the turquoise blue waters of the Al bateen Wharf.

There is a sense of whimsy upon entering the space. It is a pleasant change from the stereotypical polished and perfect approach to interior design.

How is the project unique?

The imperfect nature of the project is unique in the Emirates. We managed to find a subtle balance between imperfect elegance and sophisticated whimsy. The monochromatic internal palette compliments the extensive use of worn timber on the exterior . We used an unusual amount of hand glazed pots with Olive trees and other arid greenery combined with subtle lighting in order to add texture and warmth to the Mediterranean ambience.

The interior waxed paper installation above the dining area was done by a South African artist named Elonah O Neil. It adds a soft feminine elegance to the interior atmosphere and also acts as a sound absorbing surface.

This sense of whimsy was replicated on the exterior through the use of canvas fins that move delicately in the ocean breeze. The inspiration for this was from an installation K-studio did in Greece. It captures a true sense of Greek calmness, which was crucial in the exterior sense of place.

The use of various timber types adds to the warmth and homely nature of the design. We were also quite specific in the approach to the styling of the surfaces and areas. We sourced beautiful worn objects from South African artists and strategically placed the objects amongst greenery in abundance everywhere we found an open place. It provides a sense of curated elegance and interest .

What was the brief?

The brief from the client was to create a green escape along the water's edge in order to transport the guests to a Mediterranean inspired destination. The stand alone venue allowed us to take ownership of the external areas which has wonderful views of the wharf.

What materials were used ?

We chose very simple materials for the spaces. We placed our focus more on the textures and neutral palette throughout the design.

Venetian Stucco walls with a highly polished surface became the backdrop for the raw and antiqued materials used in the furnishings and finishes.

Verdigris Copper was used strategically within the space. A patterned divider screen creates a barrier between the pickup point and the main entrance. It’s lightweight nature and colouration provides a tactile functionality to the operations of the cafe.

The counter front was wrapped in a cementitious troweled finish to place emphasis on the bar countertop. The counter seems to float above the floor and culminates in a curved copper and marble top. The copper ages over time and adds a humble originality to the busiest surface in the cafe.

The chairs and furniture were from Greek suppliers and all fabrics were chosen from hard wearing linen ranges. The sofas and chairs are comfortable and not precious. We want patrons to feel completely and utterly at home.
