The Teachers’ Lounge project at Powiatowy Zespół Szkół nr 4 in Wejherowo is an attempt to redefine this type of space within the structure of a school. Instead of a traditional administrative backroom, the result is an environment that supports work, relaxation, integration, and relationship building.
The inspiration came from contemporary workplaces, hotel lobbies, and cafés. These are places where users can move naturally between focused work, meetings, and regeneration. The goal was to create an interior that allows teachers to temporarily step away from the rhythm of everyday school life and experience a higher level of comfort and wellbeing.
The functional layout is organized around three distinct zones. At the center is the primary work area equipped with large tables designed for both individual and collaborative activities, as well as a copy and printing station. On one side is the gastro zone featuring a kitchen island and a bar counter equipped with charging points for mobile devices. On the opposite side is the relaxation zone with a large sofa, television, greenery, and a swing positioned next to the window.
One of the most distinctive elements of the interior is a series of flowing partitions made of wooden slats. These structures organize the space and define individual zones without fully separating them, preserving openness and allowing natural light to flow freely throughout the room.
An important aspect of the project was the involvement of the school community in the realization process. Students and teachers participated in the production of steel structural elements used to install parts of the interior. This experience later became an inspiration for future projects based on co creation and active participation of users in shaping their own environment.
A particularly unique feature of the project is the use of natural copper countertops in the kitchen area. The material was selected not only for its durability but also for its ability to evolve over time. As the copper naturally oxidizes, the surface changes its appearance and gradually becomes a visible record of the life of the space and the people who use it.
The project also incorporates principles of biophilic design. Greenery, natural materials, and a warm color palette contribute to users’ comfort and create a welcoming working environment. These elements are complemented by a layered lighting strategy that helps establish an atmosphere more commonly associated with hospitality interiors than with a conventional school facility.
After several months of use, teachers have consistently highlighted the functionality, flexibility, and positive impact of the space on their everyday work experience. The project demonstrates that even a relatively small teachers’ lounge can become a catalyst for meaningful change and significantly improve the quality of life within an educational community.
