The biodiversity skyscraper

The food challenge : our contemporary cities need to aim for the production of cleanly and intensively more energy than it consumes so as to bring about an urban farming ideal. The new city needs to develop an urban agriculture to become food self sufficient by recycling at the same time its liquid waste by phyto-purification. The solid waste in fertilizers are composted to produce energy by biomass along with the usual usage of thermal photovoltaic cells and wind turbines. The new ecologic utopia aims to reintegrate the farming function on an urban scale with an emphasis on re/use of natural resources and biodegradable waste so as to close the flow of the ecologic loop. An urban farm has the potential to decontaminate polluted grounds and undergrounds with a long term initiative for purifying the polluted atmosphere in co2.

City Setting : set in a baron wasteland in need of initiative. Boreholes are built for the location of water to be used as the primary nutrient for the growth of mini lakes for condensation water capturing of heat from the surrounding towers.

Urban Farming planes : each level and field will have its own watering and nutrient monitoring systems, there is sensors for every plant which tracks how much and what kind of nutrients the plant has absorbed. The specific systems will monitor plant diseases by employing DNA chip technologies that defect the presence of plant pathogens by sampling the air. The benefits include the allowance of the use of renewable energy sources and the recycling of materials of production such as water. The vertical farms are designed to convert waste water and polluted air into clean, useable resources for crop production, oxygen produced by photosynthesis from the algae is released into the environment adding to the improvement of air quality surrounding the vertical farm.

Overall Aim : exploration of the integration of architecture and technology for creating more future appropriate housing/facilities and living/working conditions. Thus proposing a solution to increase urban density, rethinking personal space as a hive for small private living areas augmented by large communal spaces. Tower _ primary functions : separation of public/private and commercial areas which offers a purely private room system. Communal spaces for public activity and welfare/medical facilities. A solution to community development. Sky bourn agricultural complexes. Algae infused vertical farming idea : with the use of recycled resources and greenhouse methods of hydroponics, the towers can produce algae strain all year round due to large areas of them being subjected to natural light. Vertical farming within towers should alleviate climate change produced by excess atmospheric carbon.

The towers : as they stretch themselves vertically under the premise of a bionic tower - to relocate a new urban biotope for the local flora and fauna and recreating a food production which is automatically managed by the inhabitants. To ensure that there is a healthy social diversity and permanent life cycle in the towers there is a mixed program which is mainly laid out around two poles of housing and work places. Around the housing, offices and research labs, public and private agricultural, leisure spaces are designed in gardens and suspended fields set at various directions to maximize on natural light for intense crop and plant yields. Circulation : the distribution of flow is made around a spreading spine in the loop of numerous elevators, stair wells serving all the levels by separating the input and output recycled from plants, animals and humans. Thus creating various zones, buffers, mingling large and public/private spaces together and blurring the zones at stages. The use of truncated and elongated curvatures throughout the buildings calls for a better circulatory fluidity and accessibility by being able to mediate the environmental flows.

Car around idea : in the future most cars on our roads will run on electricity directly from the sun, wind and water. Thus plug-in electric cars will in turn be able to hum along whilst not giving any exhaust fumes to the environment. This will significantly decrease oil importation and greenhouse gas emissions. This scheme works with displaced recharging stations that are dotted around the city for ease of use to park/charge and go. Solar power harvestation : at daybreak each mirror array turns to a sunward position where concentrated light will heat an engine, driving pistons to generate electricity. There is an endless potential of solar power for this earth. Energy equal to the amount of 6000 times the worlds electricity usage constantly shines on the earth, but with current technology harvesting of solar power is in its infancy. The general problem is trying to supply infinite times the amount to feed the global need for electricity, building the necessary infrastructure for switching to solar would cost a lot more at current prices than sadly relentlessly burning fossil based fuels.
