A spacious four bedroom family home set within an historic canal side village with particular attention paid to the site which lies within a conservation area. Designed by the award winning Hinton Cook Architects, the design is the fusion of traditional materials with contemporary detailing.
Overall bulk was reduced by breaking the built form into a series of smaller linked structures as opposed to one monolithic structure. Attention to Landscaping and respect for context was critical to help the design blend harmoniously within its rural surroundings.
Carefully chosen materials and respect for human scale formed a well juxtaposed building taking into account adjacent properties. Constructed with the highest quality materials, the traditional approach of brick and block was taken with fully insulated cavity reducing heat loss and providing protection from over heating in summer months.
The dwelling achieved code level 3 on sustainable homes due to the low dependence on non-renewable. Methods of natural heating for low running costs were a large factor into the design of this contemporary house. Orientation of the buildings towards the southerly garden, with all ‘non habitable’ rooms facing north and increased insulation levels.
The house has incorporated a highly efficient air-source heat pump that contributes 100% of the overall heating and hot water costs. Heating is provided via underfloor heating throughout. The constraints and topography of the site coupled with the southerly orientation dictated the internal layout of the house, this is represented via a series of planes intersecting at a central circulation space.
By maintaining a flowing plan coupled with large areas of glass an overall feeling of lightness is achieved. Throughout the building there is exceptional attention to detail. The entrance hall is naturally lit by a bespoke glazed lantern combining spaces that flow effortlessly. The kitchen has been finished to exceptional quality incorporating bespoke handmade cabinetry. Key features of the interior include oak flooring throughout, an open tread oak staircase with feature rooflights, designer bathrooms and Allgood ironmongary. High specification lighting, audio and media specification throughout.
