The Weaving Mill is the fifth and final landmark building within the reconstruction plan for Roombeek, the district of Enschede that was devastated by the 2000 fireworks disaster. Designed by Tangram Architekten, the project combines 116 rental apartments with a strong architectural response to the site's layered history.
Located on the former grounds of the Twents Textile Company (TETEM), the building draws inspiration from two defining moments in the area's past: Enschede’s industrial textile heritage and the rupture caused by the explosion. Two façades are expressed in warm brickwork, reflecting the rhythm, scale and material character of the historic industrial buildings nearby. A preserved brick chimney remains as a physical reminder of this past.
The third façade introduces a contrasting layer. Clad in etched and anodized aluminium, its textured surface changes appearance with daylight, shifting from deep reddish-brown to golden tones. The façade abstractly evokes the shockwave of the disaster without becoming a literal memorial.
Rather than functioning as a monument, The Weaving Mill integrates memory into everyday life. Through housing, materiality and urban presence, the project transforms a place marked by loss into a living part of the city’s future.
