Set within Bali’s lush landscape of Northern Pererenan, Canggu, Villa Batukaru is the first two-storey residence in Stilt Studios’ Family Village, a residential project designed as a community where families can truly thrive in a natural environment. Conceived as a prototype for family-oriented development, the project explores how architecture can foster community while respecting the need for privacy. Shared spaces and a playground encourage interaction and collective activity, while carefully arranged private rooms provide opportunities of retreat for private family life.

Positioned at the edge of the forest, the villa embodies Stilt Studios’ philosophy of dissolving boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Wide openings, terraces, and natural ventilation allow the surrounding environment to shape daily life, creating a rhythm that feels both grounded and open. The design encourages residents to experience the landscape not as a backdrop but as an integral part of everyday living.
The residence's main focus is accommodating family living space - connected kitchen, dining, living room, and play area - both blending indoor and outdoor canopy, to accommodate family togetherness in all weather conditions. Villa Batukaru also includes six bedrooms: a master suite, two children’s bedroom and three guest rooms, one of which is set apart for greater privacy. This arrangement supports both family togetherness and individual retreat. A flexible side building adds space for creative or recreational use, ensuring adaptability as family needs evolve over time. The expansive living area is designed to accommodate diverse personalities and activities, reinforcing the villa’s role as a dynamic setting for family life.

Construction is guided by Stilt Studios’ modular 3x3 meter system, which optimizes material use and reduces waste. Prefabricated elements and responsibly sourced materials accelerate assembly while reinforcing a commitment to sustainability. This approach allows for precision in detailing while maintaining flexibility for customization.
Passive design strategies further enhance efficiency. Generous daylighting reduces reliance on artificial lighting, while cross-ventilation supports natural cooling in Bali’s tropical climate. A smart home system improves energy performance and lowers embodied carbon, integrating technology with environmental stewardship. Together, these measures position Villa Batukaru as a case study in sustainable residential architecture, combining technical rigor with sensitivity to human experience.
