Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

The Vrije Univercity Quarter is part of the detailing of the masterplan for Zuidas designed by Henning Larsen Architects.

The project is a further development and expansion of the area, which includes old university buildings and a medical centre, commissioned by the city and Vrije Univercity. An important part of the plan is to incorporate the existing university buildings to create an efficient integration between old and new.

The key to the VU Quarter is to create a lively, interactive and integrated area, where both the university and the city can co-exist in a single space. This requires careful consideration of open spaces, facilities and thoroughfares through the site to create a coherant and welcoming urban space, whilst maintaining a visible and indelible link to the existing city.

The combination of hierarchy and intimacy of space within a flexible and functional programme mix will achieve and maintain a unique identity to the area over time. Ensuring the spaces are functional and in use during all hours of the day becomes a key consideration during the development process, influencing the placement of amenities and the main routes through the site.
