A modular structure informs the new terminal building, so that the successful ‘one-terminal concept’ for Schiphol can be further exploited in the future. A future overhead system of people-movers connects all piers to each other and to the arrivals and departures halls. The roof curves upward to integrate the terminals spatially. The concrete main structure with its immense spans takes its cue from the baggage-handling system in the basement. A lightweight roof held aloft by the steel frame of the superstructure draws daylight deep into the bowels of the building. Offices for airline companies and airport authorities are located above the roof. The stabilizing cores of the complex contain vertical circulation that directly accesses the areas of operation. An exception to the functional design inside the building is the lounge. Here shops, restaurants, artworks and a casino transform this waiting area into the ‘living room’ of the terminal.
