Xi’an New Silk Road Museum

Invited competition for a museum to present the history and lasting importance of trade along the full length of the silk road.

The concept of the architectural scheme is to bring together colors, smells, people, etc. into one dynamic tapestry, making the history of the Silk Road a tangible rather than academic experience.

The Western Türkiye and Caucasus Region of the Xi’an New Silk Road Museum interprets the Silk Road not merely as a trade route, but as a vast network of encounter through which people, knowledge, cultures and migrations moved across continents.

The architectural concept reinterprets the historic caravanserai as a contemporary museum. Two interlocking squares define a sequence of open, semi-open and enclosed spaces, while courtyards, bridges, tunnels and thresholds guide visitors through both a physical and intellectual journey between cultures.

Light, water, earth, shadow and scent become architectural materials. Archive and exhibition spaces dedicated to Turkish, Armenian, Georgian, Azerbaijani and Caucasian cultures preserve their individual identities while remaining connected around a shared courtyard.

The museum is conceived not simply as a place that displays the past, but as a living cultural environment that can be experienced, felt and questioned.

The Silk Road of the past connected geographies.
The Silk Road of today and tomorrow must reconnect people, knowledge and diverse cultures around the idea of a shared world.
