The design team of Heilbronn City Architect’s Department faced several challenges in the design of the Sontheim youth club. Cost was obviously a major concern, but so was aesthetics, sustainability and a fast construction. With the smooth Formboard and perforated Formboard Element Facade, the container building was given its own graffiti-style solution. The sunflower perforation with over 10,000 holes gives the building a very unique appearance. To protect the facade from unwanted graffiti it has been finished with anti-graffiti coating. Daniela Branz and Johannes Straub have received many compliments for their imaginative design, in which the sun shines also on dark days thanks to the sunflower perforation scheme, and have proven with the futuristic building that it is quite possible to combine individual ideas with a tight budget.
